Currently, Destiny's Attendents are Against the Giants.
They have routed the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief and did substantial
damage to the giants' supply trains during their assault at the Glacial Rift.
The giants and their humanoid allies continue to make great pushes from Sterich
and the Yeomanry towards Keoland. However, the alliance with a newfound enclave
of Snow Elves may reset the balance.
To Complicate matters, it seems that a small civil war is
breaking out in the Attendents old stomping ground of Monmurg. Seems that some
of the noble families are taking the regional instability as an opportunity
to break their ties of loyalty to Prince Jeon. Open hostilities are likely to
break out as the Prince continues to impress the nobles' troops for the war
effort against the Giants. As word comes from his Keoish allies at less frequent
intervals, and with no word at all from their own troops sent to the front,
Jeon loses more support at home. In addition, even Chucklin
of his Watanga allies in Amedioland have reported attacks by jungle giants.
Speaking of troops going to the war front - Such is what
happened to most of the garrison that the Attendents kept at their fortress
located in the lands of the Sea Princes. Shame really, as they would have been
helpful against the cloud giant marauders who leveled Kratys Freehold in Eastern
Berghof. Through the support of their electrum dragon friend, , the heroes managed
to defeat the evil cloud giants and their cloud dragon ally, and take their
cloud fortress to boot.
Fearing that giants may be invading Sea Princes' lands, they
traveled by land (as they couldn't figure out how to operate the new flying
castle, they left it in the hands of Dexter
[oh Boy!]) to the hamlet of Hallbridges, hometown of Attendent member Staaven.
Their path came across burnt crops, pillaged roadside inns, and poisoned streams.
As they arrived, the town was being terrorized by a couple of evil titans and
their humanoid followers. After dispatching these gigantic foes, they found
that the hamlet had been razed and that Staaven's father had been publicly killed
flayed alive by fire giants. Fortunately, Staaven's mother and few other townsfolk
escaped and were held up in a remote part of Berghof.
Reunited, Sapien told her sons and his fellows that the giants
had come from the Hellfurnaces through the pass that was guarded by Alderweg
Keep - if they managed to make it through there then surely her son Dougal
and his paladins must have fallen. However, upon investigating the battleground
and ruins of Alderweg, Dougal's body was not found. Determined to avenge his
father, Staaven has taken the lead of the Attendents' expedition to thwart the
giantish threat by taking the battle to the lands of the Fire Giant King.
Finding overwhelming reinforcements repelling their full
frontal invasion of the Halls of the Fire Giant King, the Attendents retreated.
Despite the loss of their new ally, Mongo, they managed to bring his hammer
back into the fray through a resurrection. They then interrogated the corpse
of a renegade dwarf they slew in the Hall. What luck, this traitor had been
the king's tactician. Using their divination spells, they tracked the
movements inside the Hall for a few days, learning Snurre's daily routine and
the politics amongst the giant races. When the time was right, a small strike
force of Staaven, Drydian, and Sokata attacked Snurre is his own chambers slaying
him before his ettin bodyguards could even overcome the magical barriers they
created.
But alas, Snurre's own forces had been searching for the
Attendents. Employing his extremely immobile screaming devilikin scouts, the
party's cave holding was reported to Infernal, Snurre's young adult red dragon
ally. As the skeleton crew of the Attendent's cowered in their cave hide-out,
the mighty wyrm began ripping apart the volcanic earth to earn his prize. Alas
again, for the strike force had taken the best magic to slay the fire giant
king. The mighty Thorfall and Takala faced the dragon's mighty breath to defend
the others. As their forms became scorched in the wyrm's breath weapon, the
strike force teleported back in leading to a two fronted assault upon
the scaly assaultor. By the skins of their teeth, the Attendents made it through
the day.
The Attendants scryed upon the Giants, and picking an opportune moment, teleported into the private chambers of King Snurre of the Fire Giants and slew him before again retreating. They then returned to the War Council and found out that the Frost Giants were rallying. Apparently, they were attempting to gain access to an ancient crypt of a long past frost giant jarl. The belief that is they could retrieve the dead jarl's magic axe, they could use it to marshall their forces. As the Attendants prepared to set forth, Staaven withdrew to Monmurg on personal business. After tracking through the cold Jotens Mountains, the Attendants managed to beat the Frost Giants and destroy the axe relic.
Meanwhile, in Monmurg, Staaven was contacted by dark forces who said they could give him the power to avenge his family's death. In exchange for his "Single Object of Undying Love," he was promised the power to wield evocations against his enemies. Staaven signed his name in blood and received a green stone amulet before returning to his friends.
After this, the Attendants again assaulted the Fire Giants stronghold. This time preferring the full frontal strategy. To their shock, Snurre was adjoin alive, yet they battled on. During one point in the battle, Staaven called upon the powers of the amulet and unleashed a power evocation upon a giant. As a side effect, the amulet bonded with his skin. Although this was initially a successful maneuver, they were soon overcome by fire giants and retreated, dragging their wounded off as they went. They managed to outdistance their foes by taking to the air via fly spells and aerial mounts. They found unlikely sanctuary in a mountaintop aerie inhabited by the Storm Giant, Stronius. After resting under his hospitality, they were startled when a group of aarockra also petitioned for succor from their host. Apparently Snurre had dispatched his firenewt troops throughout the surrounding lands to scour the Hellfurnaces for the Attendants. In the process of doing so they threatened and burned down the birdmen's homes. Stonius explained that he would not directly involve himself in the struggle against the giants, but he had heard that a tribe of Firbolg had overthrown their Hill giant overlords to the North. He then advised the party to leave so that he may prepare to deal with the fire newt interlopers. As the party left the valley, a tempest was wrought and lightning fell upon the firenewts leaving the air stinking of reptilian charnel.
During their rest, Drydian teleported to various areas to get updates on the war effort. First to the War Council where he learned that they feared the loss of Cryllor and ordered a further retreat into Keoish territory. In Celene, he discovered that the Elves had pledged a few contingents upon the Spring thaw. Upon arriving in Monmurg, however, he discovered the capital in ruins. A civil insurrection had occurred as some of the Sea Princes deposed Jeon, leading to Jeon abdication, and a civil war. Here he managed to save Thorn, a former member of Jeon's High Guard and bring him into the Attendants. The last stop at Destiny's Keep was very unfortunate, all that remained was rubble and the standards of both Giantish and Sea Prince forces. Although it seemed that the noblemen's troops had been the first to attack the fort. A final stop at the cloud castle and Drydian learned that Dexter had managed to stabilize, but not fully control the giant technology.
The Attendant decided to once again assault the Keep. In this instance, they invisibly snuck upon the camp of troops outside of the complex. Sokata magic jarred into Chief Nosra and managed to sneak the party into the complex. They then went to Snurre's audience chamber and sealed it off with a wall of iron. Staaven, channeled the hate he had for Snurre for killing his family through the amulet. At which point the amulet expanded into a green face implanted in Staaven's chest. The face opened, recited arcane words, and blasted Snurre with a ray of green energy, melting the fire giant king into slag. They then slew the other six other giants before Drydian polymorphed into an Umber hulk and managed to burrow into the King's treasure chamber. Meanwhile, Staaven's guest snores loudly, bereft temporarily of power.
As they count their loot, many questions are left unanswered
for our heroes - What shall become of Jeon and the nobles of Monmurg?
What happened to Dougal? Why was Rhiannon so adamant about staying with the
Snow Elves? Who brought Snurre back from the Dead? What other foul powers does
Staaven's new guest possess, and how much danger does it contain?
